People often ask me “what’s your favorite restaurant in Bangkok?” – a question that I find impossible to answer given all the wonderful gastronomic delights occupying every little inch of this city. How can one choose from such a diverse variety, when you can have anything from the most flavorful somtum at a street-side stall to the most succulent kobe beef steak at a 5-star hotel. But I can surely say one thing, the restaurant that I visit the most on a monthly basis is Hyde & Seek.
Although I’m usually the type that try to avoid the buzz and the crowd and frequent a more “quiet” spot, I keep coming back to H&S. (On a weekly basis actually!) So what brings me back here you may ask? My answer would be two things the spirits and the “spirit.” The first spirits are the drinks. I probably do not need to go into details about how much I enjoy their ever-changing and innovative cocktail list. I’m sure you’ve heard me raved about how each has interesting ingredients not often used at other places such as shompoo (roseapple) and how each drink has a cute name and gimmick to it a;ready, so I’m no longer gonna talk about that. So what about the second spirit? I don’t even know if that’s the right word for it but i think it sums up that secret ingredient that this place has pretty well. It’s a combination between the lively ambiance, the enthusiasm of employees, and the passion of the people behind the restaurant – and although these things are not tangible, I can “taste” it in their food and drinks somehow. And that keeps me going back for more. Maybe, passion is my favorite kind of flavoring.
Anyhow, after this long intro, let’s get into the story. Yesterday I was invited to celebrate H&S 1st birthday at the restaurant. It was a carnival-style party complete with clowns, game booths, face paints, and, of course, delicious food.
The party pretty much embodies that second “spirit” I was trying to describe to you earlier on – I had a wonderful time savoring their various burgers, sipping on their delicious sangria, meeting other food lovers, laughing along with the people behind the restaurant who made us feel more than welcome – all these while seeing little kids (or should I say little batman, little cat, little flower as all their face were painted) running around laughing with balloons in their hands, enjoying themselves. Everything was just very fun and heartwarming. After a couple of glasses of the refreshing carnival punch, a lot of adults (me included) became kids and started joining in with the game and probably enjoyed ourselves just as much (or even more since we had the punch) than they did.
Big congratulations to Hyde & Seek on your first birthday! And I wish you an even more fun-filled and success in the year ahead!
