Big Knit Cafe

Hi there,

I found a new favorite spot in Bangkok! You guys may not know that I’m really into arts and crafts, but when I was a kid, cross-stitching was actually a favorite hobby of mine. But as I got older, school got harder, and food started occupying most of my brain space…knitting, crocheting, and sewing got pushed back to the back drawers of my brain cabinet. But it  came back to me as I entered this cozy little cafe & cozy yarn shop in Sukhumvit soi 49called Big Knit Cafe.” Walking in, I felt like I was entering someone’s living room – people from all generations sitting together, chatting, and knitting away. While a sweet grandmother is creating a new masterpiece with such experience in one corner, kids from the neighborhood who stop by on a regular basis are learning a new pattern with experienced staff at the cafe, while other girls are grabbing a yummy slice of young coconut cake. It was such a heart-warming atmosphere that’s rare in today’s cafe scene plagued with Starbucks-style “personalization.”

What was I doing there? I was making an anniversary gift! I saw on their Facebook page that you could knit all sort of special items at Big Knit -think  cool laptop covers, stuffed animals versions of all sort of popular characters, and cool beachy dresses – not just old ladies’ scarf and table covers, so I had to get there asap! I was not disappointed, since the store stocks the most beautiful exotic yarns I’ve ever seen with a selection larger than any department store’s crafts department. Moreover, they also have a large selection of books for you to choose your pattern from.

I decided to make my own Angry Birds! After hours and hours of fiddling with the knitting machine, threads, and needles; it felt really nice to be able to have a nice glass of iced cappuccino and a yummy piece of young coconut cake with lots of thick coconut shavings on top. What’s not to love about this place?

If you love all things D.I.Y, I encourage you to pay Big Knit Cafe a visit, and you will not be disappointed. I promise!

And here’s how I made my angry birds:

  • I used this knitting machine where I had to feed the yarn in and keep spinning it round and round.

  • For the red bird, I used fluffy red, yellow, and white yarns. After the knitting part is done, then all the bird needs is some stuffing and sewing.

  • Then I cut and sew some felt to gives the bird and expression and…ta da! Here’s my red angry bird!

  • The same goes for the green and the blue birds!

Ohhh those Angry bird gang is so cute. i wanna make the red and black one.
Anyway, I visited Big Knit as I wanted to do an anniversary gift for my bf too. but it’s just a simple knitted scarf as it was my first work so the staff recommended me to do the simple and easy one.
Next time i’ll try animal stuffs ^^

    1. Thank you ka! I think they might even be easier to make than a scarf na ka since a knitting machine thing (I have no idea what it’s called) is used to make the birds, so all you would have to do is spin and spin and spin the yarn ka. Next time give it a try, I also wanna go back to make some more birds =)
