Last weekend I managed to squeeze in a quick escape to Khao Lak, Phang Nga in the south of Thailand. Despite its close distance from Phuket (about 1 hour from Phuket’s ariport by car,) it was an unchartered terriory to me prior to this trip. And let me tell you, if you love nature like I do, you will fall in love with Khao Lak. The beautiful sea and mountains still preserve an untouched sense of charm and quietness that Phuket is starting to lack.
Nestled away from the busy main road in the Khaolak area, Casa de La Flora was a perfect location for me to fall off the face of the Earth for a day or two. Walking into the hotel, the first thing I noticed was the modern architecture that, somehow, blened so well with the backdrop of the Andaman sea. Geometric cubes scattered amongst the greenery created a calming contrast against the blue of the sea and the sky. It was clear from the start why this hotel is a member of Design Hotels.
Casa de la Flora, or house of flowers in Spanish, takes their concept seriously; each of the 36 Villas is named after a flower and the greenery-lined walkways represents the roots of the trees that connect the flowers together. The center of the hotel is La Aranya, the hotel’s main restaurant appropriately named after the word “forest” in Spanish.
La Aranya serves international cuisine with a Thai twist. Not wanting to leave the comfort of villa, I had plenty of chances to eat here – breakfast, lunch, tea, and dinner.
The funny thing is, my friends and I really like the Kao Kaprao – basil stitfry with a meat of choice – at this restaurant. Though it’s one of the simplest Thai dishes, it’s also and the most delicious in my opinion. And this restaurant got it just right we ended up ordering it every single meal including breakfast. (I can’t believe I am a food blogger considering how boring I am when it comes to ordering food.)
Despite having a small buffet line for the usual breakfast items, most of the dishes are ordered off of the menu to keep them hot and fresh, which I liked. I thought the egg benedict here was nicely poached and liked how it was actually served on top of a hash brown. Other usual breakfast fares such as pancakes, waffles, Thai boiled rice, and Japanese-style breakfast are also served freshly prepared from the kitchen.
For lunch we tried a couple of fusion dishes, such as meat ball with mozzarella and tomato, seared tuna with pineapple fried rice, salmon and crab meat with balsamic reduction :
Casa de la Flora also offers a small selection of desserts that you could enjoy for afternoon tea. However, the highlight is the tea – Thai iced tea ice cubes topped with creamy milk – perfect for the hot weather!
For dinner we moved across the street to another one of the hotel’s restaurant Ing Fah. With the minimalistic feel of the hotel still present, Ing Fah is more modern, with white cubical canopy as dining tables and a modern cocktail list with a twist.
And when I said modern, I am talking about liquid nitrogen, espuma, and all that jazz. My favorite cocktail is the float-inspired Twin Q Bun which was a meal in itself! Who could resist bailey’s, coke, rum, and an ice-cream made from liquid nitrogen on the spot?
While you sit and watch the sky, you could also nibble on 3 different variations of Tapas set – Thai, Japanese, and international or order from an a la carte menu. And, yes, I ordered, Kaprao, again! LoL
Now let’s talk about the activities:
Apart from laying around in the pool in our villa (each room has a private pool,) I did manage to drag myself out of the hotel to do some exploring of the Khao Lak area. The first place I went to might come as a surprise since it’s not very beach-like! My friends and I took a boat trip through the Little Amazon – a beautiful mangrove filled with banyan trees in Takua Pa. The best part of the trip was when we spotted a number of snakes and a hornbill!
For street food lovers, I recommend you visit the walking street in old town Takua pa. The street is lined with historic Chino-Portugese- style buildings and street food vendors with some interesting choices not readily available here in Bangkok.
We also visited a restaurant called Kon Tong Su that has great seafood. As you all know, I am not a big seafood eater, so a review from me would be moot. But the people I went with confirmed that the seafood here was very fresh and delicious especially the hoi chak teen (sea snails/ Dog Conch) that went perfectly with Thai spicy seafood sauce. You could also be adventurous and order the spicy Horseshoe Crab eggs salad. As a non-seafood fan, however, I thought it looked like an alien just landed and exploded on our plate, but, for those brave souls who tried it, they said it was a must-try. I’ll save it for later..may be.
And after a long day out, the spa was the best way to wind down!
The next time you are visiting the South of Thailand, you should definitely have Khao Lak, Phang Nga and Casa de La Flora on your itinerary.

สวัสดีค่ะ
เมื่อ weekend ที่ผ่านมานิดาได้มีโอกาสไปเที่ยวที่จังหวัดพังงามาค่ะ ไปเที่ยวภาคใต้ที่ไร ไปแต่ภูเก็ตทุกที คราวนี้ได้มีโอกาสไปแถวๆเขาหลักแล้วหลงรักในความสงบของที่นั่นเลยค่ะ โดยเฉพาะเมื่อเข้ามาถึง่ร.ร. Casa de La Flora เพราะโรงแรมค่อนข้างมีความเป็นส่วนตัวสูงเนื่องจากมีหาดส่วนตัวค่ะ
ชอบโรงแรมนี้มากตรงดีไซน์ที่สมัยใหม่แต่กลับเข้ากันได้ดีกับธรรมชาติรอบๆค่ะ ห้องพักของที่นี่เป็นตึกรูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยมที่มีหลังคาเป็นหญ้าสีเขียว ทำให้ดูไม่ industrial เกินไป เข้ากันได้ดีกับสีฟ้าของน้ำทะเลและท้องฟ้าค่ะ วิลล่า 36 ห้องถูกตังชื่อตามดอกไม้นานาชนิดให้เข้ากับ concept บ้านแห่งดอกไม้ตามชื่อโรงแรมค่ะ
แต่ละห้องเห็นวิวทะเลและมีสระส่วนตัวค่ะ เหมาะแก่การพักผ่อนที่ต้องการจะ relax อย่างเต็มที่มากๆเลยค่ะ นิดาไปพักกับเพื่อน 4 คนสนุกกันมากๆเลย อีกอย่างที่เก๋คือทางเกินที่เชื่อมห้องแต่ละห้องนั้นเปรียบเหมือนรากไม้ค่ะ มีดีไซน์ที่คดเคี้ยวและไม้สีเขียวปลูกไว้ตลอดทางยาวเชื่อมไปจนถึง La Aranya หรือร้านอาหารหลักของโรงแรมที่ชื่อแปลความหมายได้ว่าป่าค่ะ ทางร้านเสิร์ฟอาหารนานาชาติที่มีกลิ่นอายแบบไทยๆเราค่ะ
เนื่องจากนอนกลิ้งในห้องมันสบายจัด พวกนิดาเลยทานอาหารกันในโรงแรมแทบทุกมื้อค่ะ ตั้งแต่อาหารเช้า เที่ยง บ่าย เย็น สงสัยจะทานเกือบครบทุกเมนูแล้ว แต่ที่ตลกตัวเองที่สุดคือไปติดใจกระเพราเนื้อที่นี้เข้าค่ะ บอกให้ทำเผ็ดๆแล้วได้รสชาติถูกใจ ไม่หวานจัด ทำให้ไปๆมาๆนิดากับเพื่อนๆสั่งกระเพราทานกันทุกมื้อไม่เว้นแม้กระทั่งมื้อเช้า (ทานกระเพรากับ egg benedict….) ไม่อยากจะบอกใครว่าเขียน blog อาหารเลยเพราะจริงๆนิดาเป็นคนที่ชอบอะไรแล้วจะทานซ้ำๆๆได้ไม่มีเบื่อค่ะ
เริ่มเล่าจากอาหารเช้าเลยแล้วกัน ที่นี่มีไลน์อาหารเช้าเล็กๆสำหรับพวกขนมปัง croissant ซีเรียล น้ำผลไม้ต่างๆ ที่เหลือสั่งจากเมนูเอาค่ะ อาหารจึงเสิร์ฟมาแบบร้อนๆ นิดาชอบ egg benedict ของที่นี่เพราะไข่ลวกมาได้กำลังดีและแปลกดีที่เสิร์ฟมากับ hash brown ค่ะ นอกนั้นก็มีพวกแพนเค้ก วาฟเฟิล ข้าวต้ม อาหารเช้าสไตล์ญี่ปุ่น ทุกคนน่าจะเจออะไรที่ถูกปากค่ะ
ช่วงเที่ยงก็ทานพวกอาหารแนว fusion หน่อยค่ะ พะแนงใส่ king prawn และเนื้อมะม่วง อร่อยดีค่ะ
พอตกบ่ายทางโรงแรมก็มี afternoon tea ที่มีขนมเล็กๆน้อยๆเสิร์ฟคู่กับชา นิดาว่าชาคือจุดเด้นเลยค่ะ เพราะไม่ใช่ชาร้อนแต่เป็นชาเย็นแบบไทยๆที่แช่แข็งเป็นก้อนน้ำแข็งนำมาราดด้วยนมเย็นๆ อร่อยชื่นใจค่ะ
พอตกเย็นก็ข้ามถนนไปอีกร้านนึงของโรงแรมที่มีชื่อว่า Ing Fah หรืออิงฟ้าค่ะ เดินเข้าไปในร้านจะเข้าใจเลยว่าทำไมถึงชื่อนี้เพราะที่นั่งจะเป็นเต๊นท์สีขาวๆกับหมอนอิงให้นั่งดูฟ้าดูดาวสมชื่อร้านค่ะ
ที่นี่มีความแปลกใหม่ตรง cocktail ของเค้าที่เป็นสไตล์ molecular ที่ใช้พวกโฟมพวก liquid nitrogen ค่ะ นิดาไปถูกใจแก้วที่ชื่อว่า Twin Q Bun ที่น่าจะเปรียบว่าเป็นขนมสักจานมากกว่าเครื่องดื่มเพราะแก้วนี้คล้ายๆกับ float ค่ะ มีทั้งโค้ก ทั้งรัม ทั้ง bailey’s และจุดเด่นตรงที่โปะทับด้วไอศกรีมที่ทำเสร็จตรงหน้าเราโดยการใช้ liquid nitrogen เข้าช่วยค่ะ อร่อยมากเลย
อาหารที่ Ing Fah จะเป็นแนว Tapas Set ค่ะ มี 3 แบบ ไทย ญี่ี่ปุ่นและ อินเตอร์ หรือจะสั่ง a la carte ก็ได้ค่ะ
อ่านมาถึงตรงนี้อย่าเพิ่งตกใจว่าทำไมนิดาทานทั้งวันนะคะ จริงๆก็ออกไปข้างนอกด้วย ถ้าใครที่ไม่เคยไปพังงาแล้วอยากหากิจกรรมทำ นิดาแนะนำดังนี้ค่ะ
Little Amazon ฟังดูอาจจะงงๆว่ามาทะเลแล้วจะไปดู amazon ทำไม แต่จริงๆเขาหลักไม่ได้มีแต่ทะเลนะคะ ป่าชายเลนตรงคลองสังเหน่ที่นิดาไปมาสวยมากค่ะ พายเรือเข้าไปแล้วรู้สึกเหมือนกับอยู่ที่จังหวัดอื่นเลย ต้นไม้ใหญ่หยั่งรากลึกลงไปในน้ำเหมือนฉากในหนัง adventure เลยค่ะ แถมเจองูกับนกเงือกด้วย
ส่วนใครที่ยังไงๆเรื่องกินก็มาก่อน (แบบนิดา) นิดาแนะนำให้ไปถนนคนเดินตรงเมืองเก่าของตะกั่วป่าค่ะ บรรยากาศที่ได้จากตึกสไตล์ Chino-portugese สองฟากถนน และซุ้มขายอาหารมากมายทำให้ที่นี่คึกคักดีค่ะ เหมือนเป็นเพลินวานของจริง
มื้อเดียวที่ทานนอกโรงแรมคือไปทานอาหารทะเลกับเพื่อนๆที่ร้าน คนต้องสู้ ค่ะ เนื่องจากนิดาไม่ค่อยทานอาหารทะเล อาจจะไม่สามารถรีวิวได้ดีนัก แต่เพื่อนๆนิดาชอบมากค่ะ บอกว่าอาหารทะเลสดอร่อย โดยเฉพาะหอยชักตีนจิ้มน้ำจิ้มทะเลค่ะ
แล้วหลังจากที่ไปลุยมาทั้งวันก็ต้องมาจบที่สปาค่ะ นวดจนหลับไปเลย
สรุปทริปนี้ได้ทำสารพัดอย่างเลยทั้งพักผ่อน ตะลุยกิน และชื่นชมธรรมชาติสวยๆ ใครคิดจะลงไปภาคใต้อย่าพลาดพังงาและโรงแรม Casa de la Flora นะคะ
